About Autism & Service Dogs
An autism assistance dog is highly trained and socialised to help with the needs of the child and their families. Their role will be to act as a guide, anchor and continuous focus for the child and in so doing will offer the whole family the chance to open their door to the outside world again.
Having Colin by my side while walking gives me a sense of confidence and security that I haven’t had in years. When I feel wobbly or unsteady, I take hold of the harness handle until I regain my equilibrium. Moreover, just hanging on to his leash seems to have a steadying effect and I am able to move more quickly in a straight line, reducing my tendency to stagger and fall. Service Dog Ava Alerts to Hazard!
I had spoken to Sean on Thursday night (as he is deployed) and we ended our conversation around 11:30pm. I had to stay up afterward to work on my paper. While I was working on my paper, I saw Ava run over to the topiary (fake) bush in the corner of the dining room. She was being all weird around it and I thought she was just being silly and wanting my attention so that I would play with her at 1am. So I got up and went over to the bush to see what she was so fascinated with. I pulled back the topiary and the plug beside the bush started to spark and small flames came out of the side of the socket.
